I’m Craig Carmoney, a retired School Superintendent who enjoys taking educational trips with my family. This is the third blog post on how to make your next vacation one that can incorporate love of learning, as well as enlightening entertainment.
Niagra Falls
Right on the border of the Canada and the United States is Niagra Falls. A beautiful waterfall on the Niagra River that flows between the Great Lakes of Ontario and Erie.
Niagra Falls has two distinct sides. The Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side which is almost a half mile in width with a drop of almost 200 feet and the American Falls on the New York State side which is just shy of a quarter mile in width and a drop of nearly 100 feet. Once can view both falls at the same time on the Canadian side and stand just feet away from the Horseshoe Falls.
The area on the Canadian side above the falls is somewhat of a tourist trap type area with an amusement park and several local and unique places to shop. There are boats that travel the Niagra River and get you up and close the Falls. The turquoise water and the mist rising above the falls is something that everyone should see at least once.
Boston, MA
Boston has so much history that it should definitely make the list of places to visit on the East Coast. One might consider taking the Ferry into Boston from places such as Hull, MA. The Ferry takes you right into the heart of the downtown area where you can quickly find the start of the Freedom Trail at the Boston Common. The Freedom Trail is a 2.5 mile stretch that takes you to 16 famous sites in Boston. Places that include site of the Boston Massacre, Paul Revere House, USS Constitution, and the Bunker Hill Monument.
If you time your trip wisely, I would also suggest taking in a baseball game at Fenway Park. There are some great places to eat and hang out right by the stadium and you should probably plan to arrive plenty early to take in the history of one of the last remaining original ballparks.
